In this dissertation, I have explored and analyzed the use of everyday materials in contemporary art, with a particular focus on plastic and its aesthetic and conceptual potential. Through studying the history and evolution of this practice, I have understood that incorporating commonplace materials into art is not only a way to challenge traditional norms of art but also a means to create a closer and more direct connection with the daily lives of viewers. The works presented in this dissertation, including the candy bag and the Mickey Mouse figure wrapped in plastic, illustrate these concepts and challenge our perceptions of beauty and the artistic value of ordinary materials.
The Importance of Plastic and Everyday Materials in Art
Plastic and everyday materials play a significant role in contemporary art, offering endless opportunities for experimentation and innovation. Through their use, artists can create works that are familiar and accessible to the public, encouraging reflection on consumerism and the importance of sustainability. Plastic, in particular, is a versatile material that can be used to produce various visual and conceptual effects, including transparency, reflection, and distortion. These characteristics make plastic a valuable medium for artists seeking to explore and communicate unconventional and thought-provoking ideas.
Messages I Aim to Convey Through These Works
Through my works, I aim to communicate several important and powerful messages:
- The Importance of Appreciating Beauty in Everyday Life: Ordinary objects that we often overlook can be a source of beauty and inspiration. I want viewers to see and value the world around them in a new light, discovering artistic potential in simple and mundane things.
- Reflection on Consumerism and Sustainability: By using ordinary materials and plastic, I seek to raise awareness about the impact of consumerism and promote the importance of recycling and sustainability. Such works can inspire viewers to take action to protect the environment and reflect on their lifestyles.
- Challenging Traditional Perceptions of Art: The use of everyday materials in art challenges traditional notions of what constitutes an artwork and encourages a more open and inclusive approach to creativity. I want to inspire young artists and viewers to experiment and explore new possibilities in their art.
Conclusion
My research and creative practice on the use of everyday materials in art have demonstrated that these materials hold extraordinary potential for creating impactful and inspiring works. Moving forward, I aim to deepen my exploration and continue challenging and inspiring others through my art.
